The GLEAMS model (Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems) is used to illustrate model application in evaluating potential pesticide runoff of two similar pesticides from one soil. This limited application was chosen for simplicity in illustrating relationships between annual means and single events. When using annual totals of simulated pesticide runoff for comparing two pesticides or assessing risks, long-term 50-yr simulations are preferable to short 10-yr simulations. When short-term simulations are performed, care must be exercised in selecting representative climatic periods. For short half-life pesticides, as demonstrated in this study, initial rainfall events on or near the day of application will often contribute most to annual pesticide lost. In these cases, single event analysis may be required. Procedures are demonstrated for expressing annual total pesticide losses and single rainfall event losses probabilistically in terms of expected recurrence intervals.

Epidemiological studies have shown an inverse relationship between risk of CVD and intake of whole grain (WG)-rich food. Regular consumption of breakfast cereals can provide not only an increase in dietary WG but also improvements to cardiovascular health. Various mechanisms have been proposed, including prebiotic modulation of the colonic microbiota. In the present study, the prebiotic activity of a maize-derived WG cereal (WGM) was evaluated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled human feeding study (n 32). For a period of 21 d, healthy men and women, mean age 32 (sd 8) years and BMI 23·3 (sd 0·58) kg/m2, consumed either 48 g/d WG cereal (WGM) or 48 g placebo cereal (non-whole grain (NWG)) in a crossover fashion. Faecal samples were collected at five points during the study on days 0, 21, 42, 63 and 84 (representing at baseline, after both treatments and both wash-out periods). Faecal bacteriology was assessed using fluorescence in situ hybridisation with 16S rRNA oligonucleotide probes specific for Bacteroides spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Clostridium histolyticum/perfringens subgroup, Lactobacillus–Enterococcus subgroup and total bacteria. After 21 d consumption of WGM, mean group levels of faecal bifidobacteria increased significantly compared with the control cereal (P = 0·001). After a 3-week wash-out period, bifidobacterial levels returned to pre-intervention levels. No statistically significant changes were observed in serum lipids, glucose or measures of faecal output. In conclusion, this WG maize-enriched breakfast cereal mediated a bifidogenic modulation of the gut microbiota, indicating a possible prebiotic mode of action.

(1) Two types of B. coli are met with in urinary infections-haemolytic and non-haemolytic. Haemolytic colon bacilli are much commoner in infections in the male (72 per cent.) and non-haemolytic in the female (70 percent).
(2) It was very uncommon to obtain both these types of colon bacilli associated in any particular case, or for a haemolytic infection to be followed by a non-haemolytic, or vice versa.
(3) No evidence was obtained of direct relationship between the urinary haemolytic colon bacilli and those of the intestinal tract.
(4) The haemolytic urinary colon bacilli were readily grouped by appropriate colon anti-sera, but this result was much less common with the non-haemolytic strains.
(5) Culture media, in our experience, were of little value in the grouping of colon bacilli.
(6) A haemolytic colon bacillus has not been cultivated by us from the blood stream in the human subject.
(7) Two cases of acute infection were met with, caused by strongly haemolytic, but atypical, colon bacilli.
(8) The blood sera from “normal” cases and from coli infections were tested for the presence of coli agglutinins. Several coli antigens were employed. A very much higher percentage of positive findings were obtained with coli cases.
(9) Living colon bacilli, haemolytic and non-haemolytic, can be inoculated into rabbits in small or massive doses without serious ill-effect-in fact these animals have a remarkable tolerance for these organisms. No marked anaemia was produced by the injection of living or dead bacilli or filtered broth cultures. Agglutinins and precipitins were rapidly formed with the haemolytic strains.
(10) Eenal infections in rabbits were not obtained by the injection intravenously of various strains of urinary and faecal colon bacilli.
(11) Saturation agglutinin experiments showed in the majority of instances that colon anti-sera, made from non-haemolytic strains, are not desaturated by non-haemolytic colon bacilli other than autogenous strains, while with the urinary haemolytic colon anti-sera and haemolytic colon bacilli a much wider range of action is obtained.
(12) Precipitins and complement fixation reactions were readily obtained with coli rabbit anti-sera and filtered beef broth coli cultures.
(13) The action of No. 220 soluble mercurochrome was investigated in the treatment of coli infections of the urinary tract. This substance was found to be of definite therapeutic value, especially when employed in conjunction with vaccine therapy.

Summary
GLOBALIZATION AND NETWORKS
In this chapter, we explore globalization through networks. Of course, globalization can be described in terms of networks of trade between countries and as executed by multinational corporations (Breiger 1981; Chase-Dunn and Grimes 1995; Kim and Shin 2002). And fisheries ecosystems have long been characterized in terms of networks of predator and prey relationships between taxon or species (e.g., Cohen et al. 1993; Gaedke 1995; Krause et al. 2003). But here we will explore how human social networks mediate between global economic exchanges and the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. Thus we extend critiques of the globalization literature for lack of attention to individual agency (e.g., Schechter 1999:62) by calling attention to the effects of human relationships in globalization. Ultimately, our focus allows us to integrate theories related to social networks (e.g., social capital) as well as inform policy and management of and research on fisheries and their associated ecosystems.
What is globalization?
We define globalization as an increase in the rate of exchange of resources and information across geographic regions and cultures. Though communities have been interdependent through trade as long as people have traversed the oceans, our current awareness of globalization suggests that we are increasingly globalized – that the resources and related actions in distant regions of the world have an unrivaled immediacy in the lives of most people (Harrison 1996; Kim and Shin 2002; One World 2007).

Background:
Magnesium deficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis of migraines and other headaches. Studies in outpatient clinics have found that magnesium administered intravenously (IV) reduces headache pain. We investigated the effectiveness of IV magnesium in patients with acute benign headache who presented to the emergency department (ED).
Methods:This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial compared 2 g of IV magnesium versus placebo for the treatment of patients with acute benign headache who presented to the EDs of two teaching hospitals. Pre- and post-treatment pain scores were measured on a 100-mm visual analog pain scale.
Results:Forty-two patients were randomized, 21 in each treatment group. Treatment groups had similar baseline characteristics. After treatment, placebo recipients reported an 8-mm median improvement in pain, and magnesium recipients had a 3-mm improvement (p = 0.63). We found no statistically significant difference between groups for any secondary outcomes; however, the patients who received magnesium had significantly (p = 0.03) more side effects than did those in the placebo group.
Conclusions:We found no benefit to using IV magnesium to treat patients with acute benign headache who present to the ED.

Total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and isoenzyme pattern were studied in tumore tissue from eight patients with maxillary adenocarcinoma, chronic inflammatory mucosa from 12 patients, normal maxillary mucosa from 12 patients, and an experimental lung adenocarcinoma and normal lung tissue from 12 mice.
An increase in the total LDH activity and cathodic shift in LDH isoenzyme pattern was found in human maxillary adenocarcinoma as compared to normal and inflammatory mucosa. The inflammatory mucosa showed an increase in the total LDH activity and a normal isoenzyme pattern. The LDH alterations in the total LDH activity and a normal isoenzyme pattern. The LDH alterations in the experimental lung adenocarcinoma in mice were similar to those in the human tumours but they were much more marked.

A metallographic study was made of certain large native copper implements to determine the methods of manufacture. Metallurgical knowledge of the diffusion of oxygen into copper, the recrystallization of copper, and the working characteristics of copper are used in this analysis. The artifacts analyzed are listed below. The Wisconsin Historical Museum catalog numbers of each specimen is also given.

In the summer of 1939, President Charles G. Haines set up this committee and instructed it to study broadly the contribution which political scientists are making to government, their relations with public officials, and how these relations might be made closer and more effective. The problem assigned to the committee is one of great importance to the future of political science. The challenge to political scientists to make an effective contribution to the improvement of government processes and institutions was never so real and so great as it is today. The preservation of democratic institutions, in the long run, will depend in large measure upon scientific study and research, and intelligent, imaginative, and constructive consideration of governmental problems. If political scientists are not making their full contribution to the development and improvement of government—and we believe they are not—it is time to stop and take stock, and to set about purposefully to attune political science to the needs of modern society. We are not unmindful of the very great contribution which all social sciences may make, but we believe that the responsibility of the political scientist is especially great.
